FAVOURITE NATURAL HAIR OILS

Long time back when I was a little younger, I hated oils and I carried on the hate until about about two years ago. My mother would smear my body with “mafuta ya nguruwe” and I don’t want to remember how it smelt like. All I know is my classmates made fun of me because I smelt like bacon. The reason behind using this oil is that it protects children from “bad eyes”. This is how my hateful relationship with oils began but today I am glad that I found great oils that have been of great help in my hair journey. Some of these oils are also great for the skin.

  1. Coconut oil

This may sound cliche because almost everyone with hair mentions this oil but truth be told, it is the best. I love this oil and I cannot substitute it with any other. I can literally survive with coconut oil because I can use it on my skin and also my hair. This oil penetrates into the hair strands and makes them soft and this saves my kinky curly hair. What I also love about it is it’s smell though I know of many people who don’t like it. This is definitely my number one oil.

2. Jojoba oil

This is a new found love and I just cannot explain how amazing it is. You just have to use it to know about its benefits. I usually use this oil together with peppermint oil for my scalp massages and it makes my scalp feel great. It is light and doesn’t feel greasy at all which is one of the reasons I love it. In addition, it doesn’t have any scent which makes it perfect for me.

3. Peppermint oil

Oh! This reminds me of my favourite candy “koo” which literally smells like peppermint oil. This oil always leaves my scalp feeling fresh and tingly which is a satisfying feeling for me. I also looooove the scent it inundates and I know for sure no other oil can replace this. I use it for my scalp massages together with jojoba oil and this combination has never disappointed.

4. Cantu super shine silk

This oil is more like a serum to me. It literally smells like fruit salad. Its consistency is just right and the oil melts into the hair strands smoothly. I use this when taking down my twists or when my hair is just out because I love the texture, the smell and because it acts as a heat protectant.

Those are some of my current favorite oils. I do not have a huge list because I just like keeping it simple. I have tried olive oil and castor oil before but I just didn’t like how they made my hair feel. The most important thing in your hair journey is to find what works for you. If you want to have a happy journey, do what you’re comfortable with and you will be happier with your hair.

    1. Thank you for stopping by Rosemary.
To answer your questions, going natural can be expensive depending in the products you use. If you go for the high end products, then it will be expensive. However, there are local brands in the Kenyan market that have great products for natural hair at an affordable price.

About your breaking hair, you’ll have to find out the cause. I will have a detailed post soon on hair breakage; so stay tuned.
