I heard a little bird singing the other day. I think she was quite happy with her little nest or maybe she was just really happy that finally the heat was gone and the sky was getting a little more cover. Or maybe she was just happy that she was alive and able to bless someone with her beautiful melody. I wonder when I will hear her again – pretty hard to hear these birds with all the Nairobi traffic not to mention the rush that we are always in. Such nostalgic moments huh!

Well, May came and May went and I got a few lessons from the stories I interacted with when she was around. Since starting this monthly series, I find that reading and watching films has become more intentional. I am moving away from watching films for the sake of it and now I am choosing ones that my soul call out to. I am enjoying the process so far. Let’s get into the lessons now aye!

Film: Badla

If you’ve been an avid follower of my monthly lesson series, you definitely know that I have some kind of love for Hindi films. Badla definitely falls into this category. This is a story about a top business lady who is being suspected of murdering her lover. The whole film is a conversation between the lady and her ‘lawyer’ who wants to know the whole story so that he can represent her well in court. Might I also add that this is not a typical Bollywood film with song and dance; the way the story was told really plays with the viewer’s mind.

This film touched my heart because of the suspense that it gave me throughout the film. My heart was literally on my palm every single minute because of the kind of surprises that it had – this is the kind of storytelling that I like. Through this movie, I have learnt to scrutinize every situation, the people who come into my life or every word I get to hear from someone. This film showed how easy it is to get fooled because of not paying attention to details. One of the lines that reiterates this, from the movie, is “don’t fix your eyes on the 6 when the answer lies in the 9”. This kept taking me back to the instances when I didn’t listen to my intuition and I ended up getting in trouble or missing a great opportunity because I was stuck on what seemed to be right at that moment.

Another line that has stuck with me is “For he is a fool one who sees only the truth, but not the difference between lies and the truth.” How many times have we failed to see the people who call themselves our friends for who they are? We have to pay attention to who we let into our lives lest we find ourselves stuck in the mud. If you watch this film, you will understand why distrust may be a good thing especially when we are meeting people for the first time. So watch it!

Series: Las Chicas Del Cable

I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite series of all time. I watched season 3 this month and it definitely left me in awe – season 4 where you at? This series is set in the 1920s Spain and tells the story of four ladies who go against the patriarchal and chauvinistic norms to establish their independence. They face lots of challenges and go to the extremes to chase their freedom.

From these ladies, I have learnt the importance of fighting for what you believe in; I have learnt the importance of being authentic while fighting for what you believe in; I have learnt that good things do not materialize without a fight; I have learnt that being an independent and dauntless woman in a patriarchal society needs a lot of guts. These ladies are the perfect mirror of what it means to be a woman in a man’s world.

These two motion pictures stood out for me and have given me different perspectives about the world I live in. I appreciate the fact that I get to learn from these stories as well as get entertained. Another lesson that I have learnt which isn’t from any story but from my own experience with life is that personal growth is important and that it should be a priority. In addition, I have learnt that comfort zone is the worst place for any human. I have seen how this zone has destroyed people who have so much potential but have decided not to do anything about it. It definitely not easy to push ourselves to be better or do better but we can always try, right?

I hope these little lessons of mine inspire you to learn one or two things from your books and films. Make it a habit to educate yourself even by being observant in your environment. Open your senses to the world and live intentionally – I promise, you will not regret it one bit!
